Energy Efficiency
Team Member(s):
Lily Roberston
Project Title:
Power Pair
School:
DeAnza Middle School
Teacher:
Elaine Theurer
Project Description: Lily proposed to reduce the energy cost and consumption at her home through the installation of cellulose insulation. She performed an energy audit of the home and found that about 42% of the energy used in the home is used for AC and Heating. The cellulose insulation they propose to install is both good for the environment and specialized for older homes, allowing the home to stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Lily claims this is the best way to go, considering that the installation costs will pay for themselves in less than 9 years and the home's value will also increase!

Project Title:
Cafeteria Sustainability
School:
Foothill Tech High School
Teacher:
Emily Hunt
Project Description: The "Cafeteria Sustainability" group proposed to eliminate plastic wrapper waste created by individually wrapped sporks and utensils in their cafeteria. They estimate that over 600,000 plastic wrappers were used in the previous school year alone. They presented a resolution to the district board calling for a change in the district's wasteful practices. In response to their activism, VUSD Food and Nutrition Services received approval to implement part of their resolution - purchasing and installing utensil dispensers to replace individually wrapped utensils for the 2025-2026 school year. The group plans to continue to put pressure on the district board to have the entirety of their resolution approved, eventually replacing all single-use plastic utensils with compostable, wood-based alternatives.

Project Title:
Faucet Frenzy
School:
DeAnza Middle School
Teacher:
Dana Myers
Project Description: The "Aquatic Amigos" created a project that aims to reduce their school's water usage by 20% by installing aerators in all classrooms with faucets. The group performed a complete water audit of the faucets, urinals, toilets, and water fountains at their school. The classroom faucets stood out to them as the most wasteful, with a calculated average water flow rate of 2.5 Gallons per Minute. The aerators they propose to install would lower that to an average of 0.5 GPM. In addition to this, the group created a survey to better understand students' awareness and water-saving behaviors. The survey revealed that only 24.7% of students are always mindful about their water usage. In response, the group created a presentation slide and short video informing the students about water conservation, which was shown to all students at De Anza.

Project Title:
Break the Barrier
School:
Buena High School
Teacher:
Michael Yorke
Project Description: The "Break the Barrier" team aims to educate Buena High School students, staff, and their local community about the environmental impacts of the Matilija Dam. The group conducted a short survey to assess what the community knows about the dam, and it was revealed that only 28% of people supported the removal of the dam. They plan to increase awareness via posters, weekly social media posts with facts, videos, and personal testimonials, and even a River Awareness Day at school!
