Bottles for Profit
School:
Jonata Middle School, Buellton, California
Teacher:
Marie Chavis
Project Description:
Students identified a business opportunity that would also reduce the number of plastic bottles ending up in the landfill. By collecting all water bottles discarded in their school campus and selling them to the recycling center, they will keep 760 pounds of plastic a year from going into the landfill and collect $1,447 a year in profits. They will also put together an outreach campaign to increase awareness of plastic pollution and reduce the use of plastic bottles at the school. They already presented at the Jonata MS staff meeting. This project was implemented by students last summer in June of 2019.

Project Description:
After identifying that the highest water usage at Anacapa MS was for watering the lawns, the student decided that installing a greywater system would be the best solution to recycle water that was wasted. They estimated this system would divert 15% of the water going to the treatment plant and lower the water bill. The students presented their ideas to the Ventura County Board of Supervisors.
